Caught in the Chaos: Public Disorder Charges

Close to 500 arrests have now been made after violence and disorder has continued on streets across the UK. This is an upsetting and worrying time for many people, especially in our local community, following the tragic, fatal stabbings of three young girls in Southport.

Communities in major towns and cities across the county have responded to the horrific attack and subsequent speculation, misinformation and online activist groups. Many large gatherings have taken place, from emotional vigils and peaceful protests to some very violent and dangerous targeted attacks.

Almost 500 people have been arrested by police and 150 have been charged with a variety of offences. These numbers will rise as police have released images and CCTV of people they are keen to speak with, following public disorder.

Criminal convictions so far include:

  • Violent disorder
  • Racially aggravated abusive behaviour
  • Setting fire to a police vehicle (Arson)
  • Assaulting a police officer
  • Drug possession
  • Criminal damage
  • Possession of a weapon
  • Inciting disorderly behaviour and violence on the internet

Prison sentences of up to 3-years have already been given, with further court cases to be heard over the coming weeks.

The Public Order Act 1986 contains a number of offences which can (be dealt with in either the Magistrates Court or the Crown Court, depending on how serious the charges are. This can result in a criminal conviction, a criminal record, with sentences ranging from a fine up to an immediate custodial sentence.
